Free Roam Friday

Hello there!

Long time no see. We seem to have taken a little break last week but we're back and kickin' now! I'll actually be leaving my desert and be wandering around somewhere in the middle of Texas by the time this post goes live. It's my first road trip in several years and actually should be enjoyable! Very exciting.

I think one of the most important events was the PlayStation Network (PSN) has more or less gone live again. Because of a near-month of shafting its customers, they wanted to offer a Welcome Back package (because, you know, you were the one to abandon them), however the only way to obtain two of the five offered games was to download them from the shop. Which was still down. >_> WTG (way to go) guys.

Um... other than that, I do believe that it has been mostly quiet. This is probably because convention season is right around the corner. I have yet to go to my first con (T_T) but I hope to someday soon! I'm totally ridiculous enough to go in a homemade costume designed to be nothing in particular. Info about upcoming cons are after the break!

These are some of the bigger cons happening (in the USA) in the next two months.

June 7-9, 2011
Los Angeles Convention Center
The Electronic Entertainment Exposition is presented by the Entertainment Software Association.
I personally think that it's pretty dumb to call it the E3 Expo (as their website lists). While last year introduced the Kinect and PS Move, I think the biggest expected announcement that we know of thus far will be about the Wii's successor.

This is a multi-genre convention that has a history of being slightly more focused on science fiction and fantasy literature. It is fan organized and in its twentieth year! The theme this time is Heroes & Villains, they have multiple costume contests, and a Zombie Prom.

July 8-10, 2011
Ramada Plaza Hotel, Columbus, Ohio
It's pronounced like the oh-so-yummy crispy ambrosia of the gods: Bacon!
It combines the common loves for gadgets, gaming, and bacon! BaconbaconbaconbaconBACON! I do believe it's more modest in size and young but I can definitely see the potential. :P

July 9-10, 2011
Hyatt Regency, Santa Anna, California
This is throwback gaming here because CAX is dedicated to celebrating arcade games. You can buy, sell, and trade or play the pinball machines and coin-operated arcade games of yore. One of the best (and possibly aggravating) things about this con is the fact that playing the games is free! Now if some pile of sloth would just play a few rounds and move on before the buttons get all sweaty and gross...

July 21-24, 2011
San Diego Convention Center, California
Need I say more? Four-day badges with the preview the night before the doors officially opened were sold out at last years convention. All the badges are completely sold out even now. Thirty years strong, this beast of a convention features everything awesome. Exclusive collectibles, some of the best costumes, tons of screenings and Q&A's, a mass of special guests, and merchandise. Ugh! I'm drooling just thinking about it.

It felt pretty creepy typing its name, but I guess that's to be expected because this started out as the Fright Night Film Festival in 2005. It's a bit younger in age for cons but it's quickly blossoming into other geeky genres. There's gaming, a masquerade ball, body art showcase, tons of live music, and (of course) plenty of screenings (some from independent filmmakers!).

After all that excitement, it's time to get to the meat of things by reviewing Kharlo's posts! This week started off with another sequel: his Top Five New Generation Games (Volume II). It's funny how companies can get away with cranking out the same ole, same ole time and time again and still make money (if you can't tell, this completely includes movies as well). It actually baffles me. I suppose this makes us all the more grateful when beloved franchises are finally revitalized. That Plants vs. Zombies game will  be the death of me. So much creepy and cuteness packed into one mind-melting game. Oh, and that singing sunflower pet? I was falling asleep one night and the SO's computer speakers were apparently on too high because I almost pissed myself hearing its voice cut through the silence. It's actually creepy as hell so you get the best of both worlds!

Kharlo also wrote about what he felt were the Top Five Bizarre Games. Dude. N.U.D.E? All the answers to your question = Sex. As simple and ridiculous as that. I used to read the manga Chobits and have understood that fem-bots are just where it's at in the future. That fish-creature is creepy! Calling that bizarre is stretching it. Or we can get all philosophical and debate why females are often portrayed as advanced futuristic robots while males seem to devolve into freaks of nature that crawled back into the sea. :P Lol, I think I may have been convinced into trying the next game. I love collecting colorful crap so I get to do that and clean up the world at the same time? Sweet deal. I... feel uncomfortable about the pics of the following game. Wh-where-where do you go with that? Bahahahaha in terms of the top game. Isn't that the story of your life or your worst nightmare Kharlo? Perhaps last year's spring break? Your honorable mention is hilariously obscene, but if we're going to do pornographic games- that should be a whole post alone and can be fueled solely by Japan. XD

Time for me to saddle up and skeedaddle on out of here. I really hope that I'm not lost in the massive wilderness right now. I hope to see you next week!
