Tim Schafer. That's all you need to know. Okay, fine! Since you're not going to be convinced because you're evil like that, let me tell you about this one: it's an old-school styled RPG based around Halloween, which we all know is factually the coolest holiday ever. Kids get to dress up as anything cool they want, and the adults get to dress up like sluts. Everybody's happy! But that's not the point here: your sister (or brother, if you play as the female protagonist) is kidnapped by monsters during your night of Trick of Treating, and your job is to get him/her back safely in one piece. Along the way you meet a slew of other kids who are awesome, and together you fight evil to make things right. The coolest part? You battle in an alternate dimension where your real world costume translates to a badass form: dressed as a robot? You'll become a huge Transformer-like hero. Dressed as a knight? That applies too. There is even a costume that lets you become the Statue-of-mother-fuckin'-Liberty! You can also choose which costumes to wear and what costumes to give the other kids in your party. Even though the battle system is a little repetitive, the game just oozes charm it never stops being fun.
A few parts Earthbound, a few parts Tim Schafer ingenuity, and full parts magic. The game is on sale for both, the PS3 and Xbox 360 for $15. Completely worth it!
A simple concept that can be stretched into endless hours of gameplay. More or less, Minecraft is a game where you get to have fun building: you use blocks to create all kinds of awesome things. Don't believe me? Look at the video I linked at the top. Yeah, that dude actually made that, block-by-mother-fuckin'-block. It's amazing when a game comes along like this that lets players express their creativity. The game has gained an immense following since its debut, despite its horribly outdated graphics. But who gives a shit what a game looks like when it plays this good? Made on a budget, built to last you for ages. Minecraft is a must play!
The game has a few different versions (Beta, Classic, etc.). Worth a look!
A game where you have to rescue the kidnapped princess from a castle. How horribly generic, right? Oh, my friend, you could not be more wrong if you were a hardcore Mormon. The premise seems simple, but the game is anything but. You do have to rescue the kidnapped princess, but you're playing against another team and you have to subsequently keep them from taking their princess back. This is achieved through a robust and fun class system that you can switch through at any time by wearing different hats on your avatar, and it's awesomeness in a box. But there is much, much more than that: in order to keep the opposing team's princess from being taken back should the enemy manage to storm your castle, you will have to feed her magical cake. Lots and lots of magical cake. Why? Because this game is called Fat Princess and that title carries a certain amount of weight to it (hardy, har, har!). The more cake the princess eats, the fatter she gets...and the fatter she gets, the harder she is to carry, turning her into a huge obstacle for the enemy in case they manage to snatch her back temporarily. Of course, she does lose weight if you don't constantly feed her cake, so the game requires a good amount of team work. Victory is gained when a team has both princesses in their castle and so long as they manage to keep them there long enough without losing either.
Go buy this one right now: it's only $15 on PSN (it's a PS3 exclusive), but it's worth every penny!
This one holds a special place in my heart, and in the robotic hearts of anyone else who has played it. Really, Robot Unicorn Attack is beyond fuckin' awesome! Alright, here's the setup: you play as a robot unicorn (obviously) who has to platform at neck breaking speeds and dash through crystal stars in hopes of making your dreams come true or some other B.S. That last part doesn't really matter. What matters is that the game is so much fun and so ridiculous that it's a blast to play. It's arcade fun at its finest. You'll start off playing the game as a minor distraction and before you know it, hours will have passed as you try to beat your high score. The best part? The background song that plays while you're trying desperately to keep your unicorn from smashing into a wall/falling into a pit of doom. Seriously, the song became famous thanks to this game, but in case you haven't heard it, here you go:
Robot Unicorn Attack is free to play, so enjoy it!
I've gushed about this one enough. To know my take on why this is the best low budget game (and one of the absolute best games ever made), just read my comments about it here:
Part I.
...and here:
Part II.
Plants vs. Zombies is on a variety of platforms for a very cheap price. It's a lot of fun and will work well on almost any controller scheme (though it's best played on your PC or a touch screen like in the iPad version). GO BUY IT! THIS GAME DESERVES THE SALES!
