Top Five - Ambiguously Gay Duos Edition

Ah, ambiguously gay duos:

These are the couples that have been fueling the slash fiction on hundreds of thousands of girls for decades now, and how could they not? See, in plenty of cases it's just a fantasy (like when they slash Harry and Draco together), but in some cases...well, it's kind of warranted since the two people involved are five seconds away from buttsecks.

This article is about the top five ambiguously gay duos in gaming: hope you enjoy it!

5. Male Commander Shepard and Kaiden Alenko (Mass Effect) -

Here's the thing: Kaiden was originally written to be a romance option for both the female and the male Commander Shepard. For supposed reasons of time constraints and of "cannon male Shepard being heterosexual," or some other B.S. Bioware actually cut Kaiden as a male!Shepard romance option before the game released. It wasn't until some ingenious fans modded the first game that we, the gamers, realized just how much of the Kaiden/male!Shepard relationship was done: there were lines and lines of dialogue and even voice acting for almost all of these dialogue options.

So it shouldn't come as a surprise that there is a pretty strong gay vibe between these two even with the friendship option. You see the video above? That's a mod for Mass Effect 2. I saw it and loved it, then played Mass Effect 2 again since I adore the game. The same scene came on without any of modifications (no mention of "we had something" and no man-to-man hug), but the scene was almost as gay regardless.

These two are ambiguously gay, and if Bioware keeps the promise of m/m relationships in Mass Effect 3, you can pretty much bet that Kaiden will be the m/m love interest.

4. Male Warden and Alistair (Dragon Age) -

Technically, these two don't need to stay "ambiguous" if you mod the PC version of Dragon Age: Origins, but even if you opt for just a friendship with Alistair, the lines become a bit blurred on what happens between the two characters. It's not hard to picture Alistair wanting to be with the male!Warden when you analyze his dialogue in the friendship realm, but he seems to teeter between following through with it and letting his shyness take over.

In fact, the creator of Alistair has gone on record to say that he doesn't mind Alistair being modded into a gay romance option, claiming that Alistair would most likely become involved with someone he could trust, regardless of the person's sex. Kind of like Kaiden, it's semi-confirmed that there is bisexuality at play here, so it's kind of hard not to read into the comments Alistair makes to my male!Warden when I play origins. Especially when he's talking to me about "licking [lamposts] in winter."

3. Fang and Vanille (Final Fantasy XIII) -

I don't know what deal is with these two, but it took me a whole five seconds into their first cutscene together to know they were probably scissoring when the rest of the party was asleep. Seriously, everything about these two screams a romantic relationship and though it's never outright stated, you get interesting moments like the video above from time to time. These two obviously care about each other as more than just friends: they're definitely an ambiguously gay duo. There is not much else to say. When you play Final Fantasy XIII, you'll probably automatically assume that they're lesbians too. They don't exactly hide it well, and they kind of fall into a bit of stereotypes: Fang is clearly "the butch" and Vanille is the "lipstick lesbian."

2. Solid Snake and Otacon (Metal Gear Solid) -

I wrote an article on these two, so as not to bore you, here are the details:

1. They've been "best friends" forever.

2. Neither is married nor do they have love interests.

3. They move in together and adopt a little girl.

4. They ride off into the sunset in Metal Gear Solid on a snowmobile.

5. They have a long discussion about "love blooming on the battlefield."

6. Kojima doesn't have an issue with sexuality: plenty of his characters are both bisexual and in some cases, homosexual.

Yeah, these two could not be gayer if they rode around on rainbow farting unicorns with Richard Simmons.

1. Elliot Salem and Tyson Rios (Army of Two) -

"The lady doth protest too much, methinks."

These two are as gay as they come. They try to overcompensate for their gayness with their macho, frat boy attitudes, but we all know what happens in those frat houses when the boozes flows too much (oh yeah, I said it!). The two are constantly helping each other, they bedazzle their guns, and are probably five seconds away from "cleaning each other's rifles." Seriously, it doesn't get gayer then these two...except, it's never outright stated. They are the top ambiguously gay duo for two reasons:

1. They're not very ambiguous about their gayness.

...and...

2. They're not very ambiguous about their gayness.

What's next? They go shopping together?

Wait...sh!t! They do! O_O

  1. ...I never remembered that Metal Gear Solid cut-scene laying on so many hints! But then I was kinda young and innocent when I played it. Re-watching it made me laugh aloud, and I didn't know about the other history those two share! Fantastic, thank you for posting.

(Also it's only a few more days before we find out if Kaidan/M!Shep will stop being ambiguous about it!)

  2. Oh, and having never played Army of Two (not having any intention to), I looked it up online and discovered this wonderful quote from The Escapist. Hope it amuses you as much as it does me.

"Army of Two: The 40th Day is the touching story of Elliot Salem and Tyson Rios, two openly gay Private Military Contractors who are trapped in a terrorist-stricken Shanghai on their honeymoon, and who must alternately contend with issues of homophobia in an environment of extreme masculinity, the stresses of being in a relationship, and the danger of being shot in the face by enemy mercenaries.

"Okay, no, not really. But that would have been a much more interesting game than what we actually ended up getting."
